CURLS + WEATHER
Did you know the weather can completely change what your curls need?
San Diego is feeling extra humid right now, and if your curls suddenly seem bigger, frizzier, or less defined, the humidity may be to blame.
CURLS + HUMID WEATHER
When there is a lot of moisture in the air, I reach for a humidity-blocking gel that provides support and hold while helping keep excess moisture from the air out of your hair.
My current go-to is Ouidad Climate Control Gel – Firm Hold (the red label).Innersense I Create Hold is another fantastic option, but remember—a little goes a LONG way!
CURLS + DRY WEATHER
What happens when the weather turns dry?
Whether it's hot or cold outside, when there is very little moisture in the air, our hair can feel more brittle and lose some of its bounce. Just like our skin feels dehydrated in dry weather, our curls can too.
This is when I like to add more humectant moisture to the routine. Innersense I Create Curl Memory is a fabulous styling gel for giving curls what they need in a dry climate.
You can also layer Innersense Sweet Spirit Leave-In Conditioner or Quiet Calm Curl Control underneath your gel to give your curls a beautiful foundation.
And here's the most important part… WATER IS YOUR FIRST STYLING PRODUCT
Think 80/20: 80% water + 20% product.
Styling products should be applied to soaking wet hair. Water allows your curls to clump together and create definition. Your styling product then encapsulates that water and helps your curls set.
This part of styling is non-negotiable, regardless of the weather.
And because water is so important, you also want to be mindful of products that are not water-soluble.
If a product doesn't immediately dissolve into a liquid when you add water to it in the palm of your hand, it may not be the best choice for your curls.
Oil and water don't mix. When water is the foundation of your curl routine, layering non-water-soluble oils and products over your hair can interfere with that moisture getting where it needs to go.
It may take a little experimenting to figure out what your curls need. Don't give up after the first attempt. Once it clicks, you'll notice the difference—and you'll love the results. ✨
I check the weather often. What's happening in the environment gives me valuable information about what I'm putting in my curls that day.
And I do the same when I travel. The weather is always part of my curl packing list!
Imagine having frizz-free curls during those humid, hot summer days in England…
I did. And my curls looked smashing! 🇬🇧✨
Your curls don't need to fight the weather. They just need the right foundation.
